What are contact lenses?
Contact lenses are a curved plastic pieces that are over the eye to correct vision problems, for example for people who are nearsightedness or farsightedness. Contact lenses float on the tear film that occupies the front of the cornea (the clear outer layer on the front of the eye). The contact lenses improve vision by helping the eyes to focus, like eyeglasses.
Contact lenses can correct the most problems than correct glasses. They can also correct some problems that glasses can not correct.
When are they used?
Many times people use contact lenses because they do not like how they look with glasses. Moreover, unlike glasses, contact lenses generally do not fall off or fog or get wet in the rain and the visual quality provided is the highest for patient that referred seeing clearer.
Some people prefer to wear contacts lenses instead of glasses if they are very nearsighted or have had cataract surgery. The glasses can produce uneven vision. Contacts can also be used to improve vision for people whose corneas are damaged by disease or injury.
Contact lenses may be a more practical solution for athletes or those who work at jobs where the glasses are a hindrance. Moreover, contact lenses provide better peripheral vision (sides) the glasses.
What are the main types of contact lenses?
LASIK is a technique that reforms the corneal tissue. It can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The soft contacts are made of plastic hydrophilic (attracts water). They absorb liquid and are kept moist so that they remain soft and mold easily to the shape of the cornea. For many people is the most comfortable type of contact lenses.
Gas permeable lenses are made of a durable and slightly flexible plastic that allows oxygen to the cornea. They are easier to care for than soft contact lenses. Gas permeable lenses are replacement of the original hard lenses that were made of polymethylmethacrylate, or PMMA, for its acronym in English. The original hard contact lenses have longer life, are durable and provided good vision, but did not allow cornea to receive much oxygen. Lack of oxygen cause damage to eyes.
How can I get contact lenses?
First you need to be checked by an optometrist, who determine whether if your eyes can adapt to wear contacts, will recommend what type of lenses to use, either gas permeable or soft lenses.Check your eyes a year after wearing contact lenses continuously.
When you start using lenses, you may feel some discomfort when they are placed. This is normal. If you feel lots of discomfort in your eyes, go see your doctor. It is recommended that you should have your eyes and glasses check in 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after I started using them for the first time.
What precautions should I take with the contact lenses?
- When you start to use contacts for the first time, follow the recommendations how to use given by your optometrist.
- Wash hands with soap and water before putting in or take out contact lenses.
- Do not wear contact lenses while swimming. Soft contact lenses absorb chemicals from water. Gas permeable contact lenses will float out of the eyes.
- You should not wear contact lenses while you are sleeping. Sleeping with your lenses in your eyes can damage the cornea does not receive enough oxygen. Besides run the risk of infection. In the case of extended use of contact lenses, obey the advice of your physician about how long they can be used continuously.
- Always put your contacts before applying makeup. Use water soluble makeup. Do not use mascara on the lashes because particles may get into eyes. If you use an eyeliner eyelashes for your eyes, contact lenses can be discolor permanently.
- Do not put the contacts in your mouth to moisten or clean. You can increase the risk of eye infection.
- If you feel burning, redness, pain, unusual sensitivity to light or blurred vision, go see your optometrist promptly.
What problems can occur with contact lenses?
You can find it difficult to wear contact lenses if you have:
- Very irritated eyes from allergies or exposure to dust or chemicals and chemicals products at work.
- Overactive stimulated thyroid gland, uncontrolled diabetes or severe arthritis in his hands.
- Dry eyes due to those who are pregnant or using birth control pills, diuretics, antihistamines or decongestants.
An eye disease that affects the eye's surface are:
- Eye infections, allergic reactions to cleaning solutions or particles being deposited on the lenses, inflammation (redness) of the eye, scratched cornea, changing the shape of the cornea, abnormal blood vessel growth in the normally area clear cornea.
Frequently questions for contact lenses usage fact?
Can you use contact lenses in sport activities?
Generally you can play any sport, but you should proceed with caution for water sports and those involving airborne dust.
Can I share my colored contact lenses with another person?
It's not recommended because of increased risk of contamination and infection. Contact lenses are tailored specifically for each person.
Can I swim in the sea or pool while wearing my contact lenses?
You can, but we advise swimming goggles if they are planning on diving.
Can I wash my lenses with drinking water?
Not only is this not recommended, but it is actually dangerous to do so. Microorganisms and parasites grow in tap and drinking water that are dangerous for your eyes. Also be careful washing your face when you're wearing contacts.
Can I still use contacts beyond their recommended lifespan?
You can not. Each lens is made from materials that break down and deteriorate with use. The life span is a measure of the maximum accumulated damage. Damaged lenses decreases oxygen levels below the proper corneal metabolism levels and are bad for your eye's health. A weakened eye is more susceptible to infections because of greater microorganism growth.
